THEN: a place with a history
At the corner of Grote Markt and Poelestraat you could find a building that has watched the city change. In the 17th century, the Busch family lived here. Later came shops: a bookshop, a coat store, a men’s and women’s clothing shop. In the early 20th century, J. Boterweg sold Indian equipment here.
In 1945, much of the east side of the Grote Markt burned down, but this shop building survived, until the post-war reconstruction. Groningen wanted air, space, and sightlines, so the entire row of facades was moved seventeen metres back. Since then, the building has had many functions, faces, and stories. Now, it’s time for a brand-new chapter: Wijck.

The idea: From dream to wijck
Wijck was imagined as a neighbourhood within the city. Not a strict hospitality formula, but a lively concept with room for rhythm and surprise. A place to work, eat, celebrate, sing, drink, and meet. Born from the desire to blur the lines between hospitality, culture, and experience.
Created by a team of hospitality- and concept thinkers with a love for genuine service, and the urge to create something Groningen had never seen. What began as an idea on paper is now coming to life in the city.
