art at wijck

Where flavour meets imagination
Each work is an ode to our story

Worldly in nature, yet deeply rooted in Groningen

Spread throughout our building, you’ll find unique art projects created especially for Wijck or only on display here.

Our collaboration with local makers and creative minds ensures that every floor, every corner, offers something new to discover.

Onderstroom - mural by Petra Sluijters

In the basement of Wijck, something pulsates.

Not a gallery atmosphere, but raw energy. Petra Sluijters painted directly on the concrete: deep magenta as a nod to the old building that once stood here, abstract lines hinting at Wijck’s architecture. Onderstroom is not decoration, but a presence. It shifts with the life of the space: celebrations, encounters, unexpected turns. It links old with new, upstairs with downstairs, stillness with movement. An ode to depth, in every sense of the word.

Private Dining - by Paul&Albert

Privacy takes on a new meaning in our Private Dining.

Created with Paul & Albert - known for blurring the line between design and art - this space plays with light, form, and expectation. It teases the idea of privacy itself. Inspired by the old pink building that once stood here, the design is full of subtle nods to past and present. Are you truly alone? Or is someone watching? Our Private Dining is a place to withdraw but still feel connected.

Archaeological finds

Beneath the Grote Markt lies a hidden world.

During the square’s renovation, shards, ceramics, glass, and everyday objects emerged; traces of centuries of city life. In collaboration with the municipality, these discoveries now have a place in Wijck. Not displayed as museum pieces, but as quiet witnesses to meetings, trade, and existence. A reminder that this place has always been about coming together. What once lay underground is now brought into the light, to be seen again. Then and now. You and Wijck.

City in Sight - digital translation of an old map

What does a city look like through the lense of today?

This 3-by-3 metre piece reimagines a historic map of Groningen with a layered, graphic style that fits Wijck.
The old city contours are brought to life again. Not as an exact copy, but as an interpretation: you see fortifications, canals, streets, but also time, movement, and memory.
It’s a visual bridge between past and present, structure and emotion.

A work that doesn’t look back (like I’m Blue), but looks at the future, building on a shared foundation: the city.
An ode to Groningen, where generations have gathered, and where Wijck now continues the story.

I'm Blue - Petra Sluijters

Some things move you before you understand them.

That’s what I’m Blue does. The worldly experience of Wijck is not only about taste, but also about feeling. That’s why we found exactly what we were looking for in the work of Petra Sluijters: emotion, vulnerability, and a universal inward gaze. I’m Blue is a painting, born from a turning point in Petra’s life. After a fall down 31 stairs, her world stood still. A long physical and mental recovery followed. Her body was blue - her mind too. Blue became her language. Melancholic, yet powerful and open. She started painting; at first cautiously, then more freely. The piece in Wijck is not the original, but an echo of her process. Quiet, intense, and open. A work that stops you for a moment, fitting our aim to be a place where stories, worlds, and people meet.
